Tampax Lawsuit: Oh, So ‘Pure’ Wasn’t So Pure Afterall

If you’re a woman living within the borders of this country, then there is no way you haven’t heard of the recent backlash going against the Tampax, and it is all just not for nothing. Nah, the allegations and findings are scary and that’s why we’re talking about this Tampax Lawsuit here today.

What’s Going On With Tampax and Why It Matters

Tampax-Lawsuit

Many of you may already be aware of the fact that just in a matter of a few years, Tampax quite literally became one of the biggest tampon brands globally, and that is why a lot of women out there trusted it without even questioning anything. But then you come to know that this brand is getting involved in some lawsuit, and that changes your perspective quite a lot, right?

In case, so far you don’t know anything about this lawsuit yet, see, the debate is basically about safety and honesty. To brief you on the matter quickly, see, there have been several lawsuits stating that Procter & Gamble (P&G), the manufacturer of Tampax, has been selling tampons with harmful materials such as lead and PFAS, but at the same time, advertising the products as safe, clean, and in some cases, ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌organic. You must have not expected that from a brand like Tampon, but in actuality, this lawsuit tells a different story.

Why is Tampon Safety Being Talked About This Much Now?

If you think that this is some kind of trend or anything like that, then you’re wrong because issues‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ regarding the safety of tampons have not just appeared suddenly. Like, it is true that over the past several years, scientists and consumer advocacy groups have been demanding more rigorous testing and definition of ingredients for menstrual products.

Actually, some studies were done about all this recently, and that is why this matter became this big, like, just in August 2024, a research paper from Columbia University and UC Berkeley reviewed 14 different brands of tampons and detected not only lead but other heavy metals as well. Sure, that study wasn’t just done to expose Tampax, but surely, it opened a lot of people’s eyes on this subject, and that was enough.

And no doubt, when studies like this come out, you expect a lot of people to come forward and ask a lot of questions about why these chemicals are in their products in the first place. That’s a genuine question to ask.

How the Tampax Lawsuits Began

The‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ main class action lawsuit was indeed initiated on November 19, 2024, at the federal court in Ohio. Resulting from this, a group of ten people led by Ciji Sanchez, are making an accusation that tampons made by Tampax contain dangerous amounts of lead.

But that’s not even the serious part, sure, their product contained lead, but they didn’t even inform this to their customers, and a lot of people already are saying that P&G knew about all this but chose to stay silent.

What the Lawsuits Are Claiming

Lead Contamination

In‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ the lawsuits, it is stated that there were a few tampons of the Tampax brand with lead levels 40 times higher than what the EPA allows in drinking water.

Their argument is also that lead is not only harmful when ingested and because the lawsuits claim that since tampons are in direct contact with vaginal tissue, lead could get into the blood more easily than if the body was exposed to water.

PFAS “Forever Chemicals”

And then, you should know that there‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ are different legal actions that focus on Tampax Pure Cotton tampons, which are advertised as “100% Organic Cotton Core” and “pure.”
